On my meeting with a person-in-charge of The Cultural Board of Sabah, I brought about several proposal recurring to the culture of Cocos community in Sabah. I had highlighted of the involvement of Cocos dances in the public performances that show the cultures of Sabah besides the dances of Malay, Chinese, Bajau, Kadazan, Dusun, Indian and others, because I have not see any Cocos dance in public performances during celebrations.

THE Labor veteran Warren Snowdon has held on to Lingiari, one of the country's biggest electorates. The seat covers almost all of the Northern Territory, as well as the Cocos and Christmas islands. It had a 11.2 margin and was held by Mr Snowdon at the last election but last night there was a swing of almost 5 per cent against him in early counting. He has been a federal politician for more than two decades. His biggest challenge was expected to come from the Country Liberals, who secured less than 35 per cent of the primary vote in 2007. But during the campaign the party's candidate, Leo Abbott, faced strong internal criticism after news surfaced that he had allegedly breached a domestic violence order last year.

Just six years before Ceylon’s independence, a still-disputed mutiny in the Cocos Islands exemplified the anti-colonial frustration among soldier and the Ceylonese in general.

A significant World War II mutiny took place on the night of 8 May 1942 in a lonely atoll in the Indian Ocean. It occurred in a setting of intrigue, rebellion and the blood and tears of war. Japanese naval forces were at the peak of their southward thrust, and the Ceylonese contingent on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands was restless.

On 5 August 1942, bombardier Gratien Hubert Fernando, a member of the Ceylon Garrison Artillery (CGA) and just 23 years old, remained quiet as he was led to the gallows at Welikade Prison in Colombo. His courage baffled the onlookers. The first of three Ceylonese soldiers to be hanged for their role in the mutiny on the Cocos (Keeling) Islands – a remote atoll in the Indian Ocean – Fernando and his compatriots were the only Commonwealth soldiers to be executed for mutiny during the Second World War.

With the outbreak of hostilities in Europe, many Ceylonese had enthusiastically volunteered for service with the Allied Forces. Seeking adventure and the chance to travel abroad, most were from the Anglicised middle classes and had been educated in the island’s leading colleges. However, this period also coincided with growing pressure within the island for independence from Britain. Although most Ceylonese wholeheartedly supported the war effort, the left movement, spearheaded by the Trotskyist Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), opposed what they termed an ‘imperialist’ war – a stance that resonated with the sentiments of many youths.

Ceylonese volunteers from the CGA and the Ceylon Light Infantry (CLI) were posted to the Cocos Islands from March 1941. A group of atolls located approximately halfway between the southwestern tip of Australia and Ceylon, the Cocos served as an important cable relay and wireless station enabling secure communications between Australia, Southeast Asia and Britain. It also functioned as an aviation fuel depot and, from 1944, as an airstrip from which bombing missions were to be conducted deep into Japanese-occupied territory.

The Ceylonese detachment on Cocos was deployed to the two northern atolls in the group – Horsburgh Island and Direction Island. Their prime task was to defend the island’s communications’ facilities against Japanese attack; to this end, Horsburgh atoll was equipped with a battery of two six-inch field guns. On the other atolls, to the south, lived about 1400 islanders of Malay descent. Cocos was certainly no tropical paradise. The supply of fresh water was limited, mosquitoes, centipedes and scorpions could make life miserable, and there was little scope for recreational facilities.

In the months prior to the mutiny, a dramatic turn of events had brought the war much closer to home for the Ceylonese. Japan’s unprecedented advances in East Asia were being closely followed by all Ceylonese, including those who had volunteered on Cocos. Many watched with amazement as, for the first time, Western forces were being routed at the hands of an Asian power. Nightly propaganda broadcasts on Radio Tokyo Rose extolled the slogan of ‘Asia for the Asians’, igniting the belief for some that a Japanese intervention was the best way to end British rule in Ceylon. Nevertheless, this view was tempered by a real fear of the consequences of such an invasion, as news had spread of atrocities being committed by Japanese soldiers in East Asia. Compounding these developments was the resentment that many Ceylonese volunteers felt at the preferential treatment given to their white-skinned counterparts. Barred from the ‘whites only’ clubs where scotch and soda flowed freely, the irony of fighting to advance the cause of freedom while encountering second-class treatment in their own country did not escape attention.

On Cocos, Gratien Fernando too found himself increasingly embittered at what he perceived as the racism of the commander, Captain George Gardiner. A British citizen and chartered accountant who had obtained his commission in Ceylon, Gardiner was by many accounts a very strict disciplinarian. His deputy, Lieutenant Henry Stephens, was a Eurasian planter in Ceylon who had flaunted his English ancestry even as a schoolboy. Gardiner’s predecessor, Captain Lyn Wickramasuriya, a Ceylonese, was wary of both men’s attitude to the soldiers under their command, and on ending his tour of duty advised Gardiner: ‘These are Ceylonese volunteers who are part of the war machine. Do not ever treat them like black cattle. They must be never be driven. They must be led. Treat them as equals in the common cause. Be firm, be ruthless but above all be fair and they will be loyal to you to a man.’ It seems Gardiner did not heed these words.

White man’s clemency
The Japanese attack on Ceylon in April 1942 only heightened the fears of the Ceylonese defenders on Cocos. The atoll had already been bombarded several months earlier, and another attack seemed imminent. The authoritarian leadership style of Captain Gardiner and his deputy soon manifested in a host of disciplinary problems among the men. It was against this backdrop of deteriorating morale, fuelled by isolation as well as a vision of the end of British dominance in Asia, that Fernando hatched a mutinous scheme, discreetly sounding out the views of several other men he deemed sympathetic. The plan was to seize Gardiner and Stephens, gain control of the defences of Cocos, signal the Japanese High Command and proceed to finalise surrender. It was a daring and risky proposal, but not beyond realisation. The date set for the mutiny was the night of 8 May 1942.

Initially, the plan appeared to proceed smoothly. Fernando’s men succeeded in disarming several of the non-mutineers while they slept. But soon things began to go awry. Roused by the commotion, several loyal troops sought to investigate what was happening. In the ensuing confusion, Gunner Samuel Jayasekera was shot and died – and with him, the possibility of a bloodless mutiny. In a defining twist of fate, the Bren gun that Fernando hoped to train on those resisting the mutiny inexplicably jammed. In an instant, the momentum was lost and Fernando realised that his plan had failed. Negotiating a surrender with Stephens, Fernando’s fate, along with those of his fellow conspirators, now lay in the hands of a furious lieutenant.

Convening a field-general court martial with himself presiding (a self-appointed jurisdiction that was certainly questionable), Stephens informed Ceylon of the events and asked for reinforcements. One by one, those implicated in the mutiny took the stand. When the Court eventually delivered its verdict on 16 May, seven men were found guilty on three charges, including causing a mutiny or conspiring to cause a mutiny in His Majesty’s Forces. Although Gardiner wanted the condemned men to be executed at dawn, confirmation from the Ceylon Army Command was not forthcoming. Instead, preparations were made to transport the mutineers to Ceylon. This was done amidst great secrecy, as there were grave fears of the political consequences that news of their predicament would have. When they arrived in Ceylon, the mutineers were marched under heavy guard at night to the military prison in Flagstaff Street in Colombo.

Despite strict wartime censorship, details of the mutineers’ plight soon leaked to the general population. Meanwhile, although a ruling by the assistant judge advocate-general had amended the findings of the original court martial, it had confirmed the sentence of death for three men, with the others now receiving extended jail terms. Despite the intervention of leading local political figures and desperate pleas for clemency by family members to then Governor Andrew Caldecott and Commander in Chief Admiral Geoffrey Layton, the death sentences were not commuted. Fernando himself rejected what he called ‘the White man’s clemency’ and went to the gallows on 5 August 1942. The two other condemned men – gunners Carlo Gauder and Benny de Silva – were hanged shortly afterwards.

The circumstances surrounding the Cocos Islands mutiny continue to generate controversy. Missing wartime records, conflicting accounts by those who served on Cocos regarding what actually transpired prior to the mutiny and a general reluctance by family members to speak of the events have meant that the exact course of events leading up to the mutiny remained shrouded in mystery for many years after the war. Today, the circumstances surrounding the revolt are better known, especially following the publication of The Cocos Islands Mutiny (2001) by Noel Crusz, perhaps the most thorough account of the mutiny to date. While mutiny is considered among the gravest of military offences, it is now clear that there were many extenuating circumstances, not least poor command and racism, and that the military justice meted out to the mutineers was flawed.

In a startling disclosure, former Sri Lankan President J R Jayewardene revealed at an imperial banquet held in his honour in Tokyo in 1979 that he had held secret discussions with the Japanese consul during the 1940s to discuss how to be of help should the Japanese invade Ceylon, providing they helped the island attain independence. While Fernando was at the time vilified as a traitor by the colonial administration, his sentiments and longing for an independent Ceylon were clearly shared by many other Ceylonese. Remaining defiant to the end, on the eve of his execution he proclaimed, ‘Loyalty to a country under the heel of a white man is disloyalty.’ Little could he have imagined that within six years of the failed mutiny, the yoke of colonial rule would be lifted and a newly independent Ceylon would take its place among the free countries of the world.

Richard Jervis RAF veteran returns to Cocos Islands

An RAF veteran, 87-year-old Richard Jervis from Scarcroft, has returned to a remote atoll in the Indian ocean.

The Cocos Islands were to be used as a springboard to launch aircraft for the invasion of Japan.

Surrender came first with the dropping of the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Instead of fighting, Richard was given the job of keeping the troops on the island entertained during the long wait to be shipped back home.

Richard remembers how he got to the Cocos Island: "I was a young Bomber Command navigator... I flew on 36 bombing raids over Germany."

Continuing the fight

On these bombing raids into Germany Richard's plane sustained flak damage several times - once the log recorded nine different holes in the plane and it also landed with a bomb, that failed to drop, still in the bomb bay.

Six weeks after his tour the war in Europe ended and Richard answered a call for young experienced navigators to help in the continuing fight against the Japanese.

"I set sail through the Mediterranean on a ship with 600 other airmen heading towards Bombay."

Onboard Richard made such an impression looking out for the troops that he was made the Welfare Officer and headed for Delhi.

"By the time I got there I found out that the war had been ended and the atomic bombs had been dropped. I was promoted in Delhi to Flight Lieutenant, and flew out to Ceylon and on to Cocos."

There are two atolls and 27 coral islands in the group. The islands are in the Indian Ocean around 1500 miles from both Australia and Sri Lanka.

Raising morale

During his time on the atoll Richard personally escorted famous singing star Gracie Fields on a morale-raising tour and oversaw the broadcast of Hollywood movies (some still unreleased) on to a white sheet in the jungle.

Some of the films were in colour - a rarity for 1945.

A football league was arranged with games played on the beach when the tide went out.

He was on the island for more than a year in charge of the welfare of two bomber squadrons, a fighter squadron and a squadron of torpedo-carrying aircraft, and thousands of Indian troops that had helped build the air base.

The base was also the location of a cable and wireless station for a secret undersea communications cable.

In order to be demobbed Richard navigated a aircraft all the way back to Germany from the atoll. His long journey included stops at Bombay, Bahrain, Baghdad, Haifa and Paris before landing in Germany, a total of 44 hours in flight.

Now thanks to a lottery grant Richard has been back to the remote island, midway between Sri Lanka and Australia.

"When I went back to the island in January it was good to go and see the place, it seemed a lot more overgrown than it was at the end of the war. One of the jetties was still there and I saw where my tent used to be located but the jungle had taken over the spot."

The Big Lottery Fund is helping Second World War veterans with its Heroes Return scheme, awarding grants for ex-servicemen and women to return on commemorative trips back to places across the world where they saw action.

Veterans or their widows/widowers can still apply to the fund as it remains open for applications until January 2011.

I was attending a birthday party of my relative last night. Who has been invited are friends and relatives. By the time I arrived, I didn't expect to meet my relatives whose I never meet before. In this meeting, all the relationship among us has been revealed and so for the history of ancestors, migration, wars, and the life in the origin country, Cocos Islands. The Veteran is a siblings of my grandmother. There's a diversity in their mixture of ethnics and culture. My relatives are ethnically-mixed such as Bruneian-Cocos and Dutch-Cocos.

There's have been ideas saying that the cultural dances of the Cocos community should be promoted to the Cultural Ministry. It is indeed a good idea. If the ministry approve and give much supports on it, we will achieve our goal. Cultural knowledge among the Malaysian must be enhanced through cultural interchange between ethnics (not races [see the difference between ethnics and races in detail definition]). In this situation, what we lack is funds and mans. I will consider to have a discuss with my close relatives for what this idea has.

The story of migration to North Borneo

According to my family stories, it was believed that my late grandfather, Jeffery was in the ship to North Borneo during the 1950s. Before the batch depart to their destination. The Clunies-Ross family had appointed a few from them to have a look on a new strategic place for their emigration from the Cocos Islands. Firstly, they checked the conditions of Malaya, from the Johor to Terengganu, concerning the geographical and economical conditions of the place.

Malaya is not a suitable place for them, they said. So, they move on to Borneo and successfully found a place near the East Coast of Sabah, at the Tawau Division. The first batch with around 50 passengers, if I were not mistaken, departed for the first time.

Author Biodata

Adam Danial bin Jendy. A Malaysian Cocos. Born at Kota Kinabalu on 25^th December 1994. First generation at Malaysia as father was born in Cocos (Keeling) Island in 1943. Have descendant of Cocos, Scottish, Malacca (Malay), Bantam (Javanese), Norwegian, Chinese and Indian. Like the study of the Cocos origin and study of politics and business. First book wrote is An Island Story & Islander Culture - Cocos Community. Hometown at Kg. Cocos, Lahad Datu but Kota Kinabalu can be considered as my second hometown.

Foreword

The main aim and objective I write this book is to spread the knowledge of the customs, cultures and arts of Cocos community.

I put a lot of effort in order to write an excellent book. As I realize that the information of Cocos community in the internet and books is really hard to find. So, I decided to write a book that contains a full set of information regarding the Cocos community.

This book took a lot of my time to complete, including the interview of people to get information. I hope readers of this book can use the information in this book in a right and good way.

DANSA

Dansa or dangsa is the dance of the Cocos Islanders from the Lahad Datu district on the east coast of Sabah. This dance is usually performed by three couples during weddings and often-festive occasions. There is much feet stomping, making it a very lively dance. Music is provided by a couple of violins called biola. The tops of the costumes for boat the male and female dancers resemble the Scottish Highlanders with their frilled shirts and scarves. The women wear these over batik sarongs. Then men a songkok and also sarong batik putih with heavy shoes to produce the lively beat of the dance.

The "Genuine" Cocos are hard to find now

Cocos community, a small community. However, many of them are mixed-blooded. They are mixed especially with Bugis, Chinese and Bajau (if wrong please tell me).

Including me, I am a half breed Cocos mixed with Malacca Malay with Chinese descents. The culture of Cocos, should be preserve until today although they are not pure Cocos.

The culture and language is the identity of a community. It is not too late to gives down Cocos culture to the next generation. Why we should pass down and practice Cocos culture to them? Because we need to protection the genuineness of our culture.

There are nothing wrong too learn many language. But, we always heard about the importance of mother tongue. In Malaysia, Chinese community very looked up at their language. They defend for their culture. Why we as Cocos community can't do like Chinese? We are Malaysian Cocos. There are no difference between Malaysia.

We should be grateful to be a Malaysian. In Cocos island, Cocos community are not allowed to speak their mother tongue (Cocos) while on duty and even in school.

Tadarus Alquran During Ramadan

Tadarus means the reading of the Alquran or the holy book of the Muslim during the month of Ramadan is the norm of the Cocos Community. Normally when the reciter reads, he is accompanied by four others who act as witness to his reading and he remains corrected should he make a mistake.They have to finish the whole book which contains 30 chapters, i.e. one chapter for one day.

Time To Light Up Your House And Compound

The last week of Ramadhan is the time to light up your house and your compound. This time of the month it will be very bright in the villages of the Community. It could signal the coming of the 'light' or enlightenment after 3 weeks of fasting and the coming of Islam in the 17th day of Ramadhan, the Nuzul AlQuran.

This is the time when the holy book of AlQuran was first revealed to the Holy Prophet. This is also the time when the much awaited night of Laitulkadar is sought.

Lots and Lots Of Feasting

The Cocos Islander Community likes to hold lots of feasts to mark certain occasion. For the month of Ramadhan (fasting) and before that the month of Arwah or the deceased and after that the month of Syawal or Hari Raya the community holds feast, as well as the 15th and the 21st and the 30th day of Ramadhan. That is the religious custom and tradition of the Cocos Islander Community which is carried out until this date despite the change in time, in following the footsteps of their forefathers.

Lebaran

The Cocos Islander Community normally prepares the Hari Raya with a party called 'lebaran', held on the eve of the Hari Raya and the last day of fasting and it is held until night falls followed by the takbir or the verse that signals the coming of the Hari Raya the next day. In the past a sound of the drum or beduk follows to inform the village folks as there were no radio, television or astro those days.

The families take turn for the priest called 'imam' and the people to come to their houses. Before the 'kondangan' or feast the head of the family that holds the feista will normally tell the priest his wish or wishes.

After the reading of the prayer and the short 'nasyid' or verse, the food and drinks are distributed to be taken home. These are called 'berkat' or the blessed food. Some are eaten in the host house.

Kondangan and celebration in Ramadhan month

Kondangan

The Kondangan is the feast that is normally held by the Cocos Islander Community. In the Kondangan it is a must to have 3 kind of dishes beside the other dishes of cakes,cigarettes, fruits,snacks including chocolates etc. The 3 dishes are;

'Rasul' made from the glutinous rice mixed with turmeric and the tandoori or grilled chicken on top of the rices and covered with white cloth.

7 plates of sweets made from rice but mix with raw sugar (brown) or nira sugar or sometimes called gula melaka and coconut milk and they taste sweet and a little bit salty called 'bubur'.

White Rice with the other dishes and gravy like fried fish, steam vegetables,prawn paste etc.

This could also have symbolized the 3 categories of levels in the community, namely the Kings, Scholars or Saints or Wali and the common folks.

The 29th day of the fasting month is celebrated with the big feast or 'kondangan',at the eve of the Hari Raya. This could have symbolized the day of celebration after the coming of Islam.

Cocos Islander Community also celebrated the 21st day of the fasting month with the making and cooking of the ketupat, but this time it is boiled and normally taken with satay or as they are. You are taught to weave the ketupat from the coconut tree young leaves and it has since become a tradition not not only to the Cocos but all Malay community. It could also be a symbol of the coming of Islam that had brought people to enlightenment from darkness.

The Cocos Islander Community had normally celebrated the 15th day of the month of fasting with the making of a kind of sweet cake called 'kueh pasung'. The flour is put into the banana leave and steamed. It looks like a pyramid. This could have symbolize that the community could have some association with Eqypt, where the pyramids are normally found and they are the resting place of the Eqyptian Kings or Pharoah. Some of the Cocos Islander Community had originated from Sumatera and the Egyptian had come to Sumatera in search of the 'kapur barus' or limestone to use for their mummies.

A largely unknown people, who have called themselves Australians for only the last quarter of a century, are making a stand to preserve their cultural heritage on a tiny Indian Ocean outpost.
Tensions are peaking in the Australian territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands as the majority population of Cocos Malays fight a ban on their native language, alleging they are being victimised by public servants from the mainland.

Cocos Malay workers for the local shire are being monitored daily by an English enforcer, whose role is to catch them speaking their unique oral dialect, a version of the trading Malay of the East Indies.

At the school on Home Island, where Cocos Malay is the first language of about 450 Muslim residents, children such as 10-year-old Fatihah Dzuljaidi are "classroom police officers" who are encouraged to issue "speaking tickets" to classmates uttering Cocos Malay.

The Cocos Islands, 2768km northwest of Perth in the Indian Ocean, were integrated into Australia in an act of self-determination in 1984.

The population of about 550 includes about 100 people of European descent.

All islanders observe the prophet Mohammed's birthday but not the Queen's.

At the Home Island school, Fatihah is given an old Australian Federal Police shirt to wear when it is her turn to monitor non-English speakers as a classroom police officer.

Other classroom police have been allowed to wear an AFP cap for the day.

Fatihah's friend Niza Alan, 8, was recently made to pick up rubbish after she was caught speaking Cocos Malay in class.

The punishments, which have included being made to stand facing the wall, are now the subject of a complaint to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission.

But the malcontent among Cocos Malays has grown mainly from conflict at Cocos Islands' two main workplaces, the shire and the community-owned co-operative.

After it emerged this week that an airport worker and a forklift driver for the co-op had been earning a base rate of $12.47 an hour, Cocos Malays formed an advocacy group called Perhimpunan Orang Pulu Kokos to support a claim of more than $150,000 in back pay for 15 workers. Last week, antagonism increased sharply between the population of about 450 Cocos Malays living on Home Island and public servants on West Island, a 30-minute ferry ride away, over a series of provocative placards that appeared across Home Island.

Some urged respect for Cocos Malays and their language but another alleged locals were being forced to tolerate racism and called for the sacking of shire chief executive Michael Simms.

Cocos Malays were incensed when one banner of support for their new advocacy group, known as POPK, was defaced to read: We Support PORK.

At a fiery community meeting last Wednesday, Imam Zaitol Wallie held up the defaced sign and said his people's culture, language and human rights were under attack.

"This shows no respect for the community," he said. The breakdown in relations comes amid rising unemployment on Cocos Islands, which has struggled to find a lasting industry since Alexander Hare landed in 1826 with about 100 workers of mostly Malay descent.

Local Centrelink manager Haji Adam estimates the jobless rate on Home Island has reached 65per cent from about 60 per cent a few years ago.

The co-operative has provided local jobs since 1978 when it was formed from assets bought by the federal government as part of its takeover of island land from the Clunies-Ross dynasty.

The co-op owns the Cocos Beach Motel, Tropika Restaurant, supermarkets on both islands and has routinely been given government contracts for stevedoring and barge services.

Next month, a federal parliamentary inquiry will visit Cocos Islands to take evidence from residents about the island's economic future, but some residents are also preparing to tell the committee that the community's economy is stunted because it is deeply divided.

Divisions intensified after the widely circulated review of a July 29 shire council meeting showed that shire workers would accrue demerit points and would have to provide morning tea for colleagues if they were caught speaking Cocos Malay 10 times.

An email from corporate services director Melinda Lymon states: "Jamill will be the enforcer this week and will keep a record of each time English is not spoken - everyone is to assist by notifying the enforcer if English is not being spoken. After 10 marks for someone - then morning tea it is!!"

Mr Simms told The Australian that tension over the shire's English-only policy was a storm in a teacup whipped up by visiting unionist Gordon Thomson, the local workers agent for the Australian Services Union and the Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union.

"There are 26 staff at the shire and three of us are not Cocos Malay," Mr Simms said. "We felt alienated because we were unable to get involved in discussions or conversations because they were always talking in Cocos Malay.

"I thought this was discourteous and I know it wasn't done in an offensive manner but a lot of the staff have trouble with English and we discussed it with the staff and they agreed speaking English in the office was a good way to improve their English skills."

The banning of Cocos Malay is an emotional issue for elders such as Cree Haig, one of three leaders who in 1984 successfully urged his people to vote for political, social and economic integration with Australia.

After the UN-sponsored ballot, the commonwealth promised "to help the Cocos Malay people preserve their customs and practices, as part of the family of people which make up the Australian nation".

Mr Haig told the community meeting last Wednesday that English was important, but the shire's rule was humiliating.

"English is important for our future, for our children, economically," he said.

"But to make people lose points and bring in morning tea, they should come up here and apologise for bringing that into a workplace."

While the shire's edict has been roundly condemned, the Home Island schools punishment for children who speak Cocos Malay in class has elicited a mixed reaction from parents.

Alan Medous said he was upset when he found out that his daughter had been given rubbish duty as punishment for speaking Cocos Malay in class.

"I heard this was happening at the school so I asked my daughter 'does this ever happen to you?' and she said 'yes, I have to pick up the rubbish if I speak Cocos Malay'," Mr Medous said. "I felt shocked. I don't want my daughter to feel that her first language is wrong."

But Fatihah's mother, Mak Emma, said she was comfortable with her daughter's role as an occasional classroom police officer patrolling for non-English speakers.

"I got a surprise one day when she walked in the front door wearing an AFP shirt but the teacher's intentions are good so I don't mind," she said.

"My children are doing very well at school but their English results are always low because it is their second language. I want them to have strong English."

She said she was concerned by the poor relationship between her community and public servants on the island. She believed a portion of public servants came to work on the island mainly for its idyllic lifestyle.

Orang Cocos harus bergantung pada diri sendiri

Sebagai mana yang biasa kita dengar,

7. Terdapat sebuah buku baru cetakan tahun 2006 ini yang berjudul “Ke Arah Kelahiran Melayu Glokal” tulisan Dato’ Dr. Hassan Ahmad, bekas Ketua Pengarah Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka. Buku tersebut menghimpunkan tulisan 40 artikel Dato’ Dr. Hassan pada tahun 2003 dan 2004 berhubung soal memperkasakan bangsa melalui pelbagai kekuatan. Gagasan Melayu Glokal pula saya utarakan pada tahun 2005. Buku ini adalah contoh sambutan cendiakawan tentang konsep Melayu Glokal. Oleh itu, konvensyen seumpama ini adalah menepati objektif agar konsep Melayu Glokal dapat lebih difahami dan dikembangkan.

8. Ayuh kita melihat sedikit kajian mengenai sejarah orang Melayu. Jika kita merujuk kepada buku Prof. Syed Hussien Al Atas yang bertajuk “Mitos Pribumi Malas”, beliau telah menganalisis asal usul, punca dan akibat pribumi yang malas iaitu orang Melayu daripada abad ke 16 hingga ke 20 di rantau ini. Beliau merumuskan bahawa orang Melayu dianggap pemalas oleh kolonial Barat kerana orang Melayu tidak mahu bekerja dengan penjajah yang menjatuhkan maruah mereka. Sarjana barat disebut pada ketika itu cenderung untuk menjatuhkan maruah pribumi Melayu. Namun, tuduhan kemalasan Melayu bukan disebabkan oleh malas yang sebenar. Sebaliknya adalah disebabkan oleh penolakan mereka untuk bekerja sebagai buruh ladang dan ketidakadilan yang diterima oleh mereka dalam kegiatan ekonomi kapitalis yang dikuasai oleh penjajah. Dibuktikan juga bahawa masyarakat Melayu akan rajin apabila minatnya timbul. Oleh itu, generalisasi masyarakat Melayu malas adalah tidak tepat dan suatu mitos.

9. Sekarang ini bangsa Melayu masih ketinggalan. Oleh itu adakah pribumi malas masih lagi mitos atau kebenaran? Banyak analisa telah dibuat tentang punca ketinggalan bangsa Melayu dalam pelbagai bidang. Ada yang menyatakan ianya disebab oleh dasar pecah dan perintah penjajah yang meletakkan orang Melayu di kampung, orang Cina di bandar dan orang India di ladang atau estet. Ada pula yang menyebut disebabkan faktor genetik, turun temurun, sememangnya Melayu memang begitu, lantas mencadangkan perkahwinan campur sebagai satu kaedah untuk mengatasinya. Ada yang menyatakan pemimpin dan kerajaan perlu berbuat sesuatu yang drastik bagi membina Agenda Melayu kerana dianggap masih tidak cukup usaha ke arah itu.

Tidak ada sebarang alasan untuk kita tidak maju, hanya kita hanya tidak berusaha untuk maju.

Mengapakah suku kaum Cocos tidak berpa dikenali di Sabah khususnya di pantai barat?

Sabah sebagai negeri yang multi-etnik dan agama. Menurut rekod, ada lebih kurang 30 lebih etnik di Sabah ini.

Saya berharap saya dan warga Cocos dapat bersama-sama memajukan diri sendiri, agar suku kaum kita dapat dilihat bukan sahaja di Sabah, Malaysia malahan dunia.

Sebagai suku kaum minoriti di Sabah, memang sukar untuk mendapat nama.

Silam yang merangkumi Tungku, Lahad Datu dan Kunak boleh dimajukan dengan promosi makanan berasaskan produk perikanan.
Antara produk makanan yang boleh dimajukan termasuklah nasi kuning yang disifatkan sebagai salah satu produk makanan warisan nasional penduduk di Kampung Cocos.

Akuakultur, keunikan sejarah Silam serta aktiviti lain yang membabitkan marin dan pertanian.
Menurut kajian yang dijalankan oleh UKM, telah diketahui bahawa seramai 5, 000 penduduk di kawasan Silam ini hidup dalam kemiskinan.
Salah satu cara untuk membantu rakyat-rakyat yang hidup dalam serba kesusahan di kawasan Silam ini ialah dengan membantu mereka keluar dari kepompong kemiskinan, dengan meningkatkan aktiviti yang boleh menyemarakkan semangat rakyat untuk berusaha.

Sejarah Kampung Cocos Segama Lahad Datu

Datang Dari Kepulauan Kokos

Menurut sejarah, Kampung Kokos mula dibuka sekitar tahun 1957. Penduduk asal kampung ini ialah mereka yang datang dari Kepulauan Kokos (Cocos) yang terdapat di Kepulauan Krismas iaitu terletak di antara Australia dan Sri Lanka. Kedatangan kaum Kokos ini berikutan kuasa Inggeris yang dahulunya menakluki Sabah.

Perkataan Cocos dikatakan lahir dari perkataan Coconut Island yang bermakna Pulau Kelapa dan perkataan Cocos adalah ringkasan dari perkataan Coconuts. Pulau itu mendapat nama yang sedemikian kerana lingkungan pulau tersebut dipenuhi dengan pokok kelapa.

Menurut cerita orang tua-tua yang juga terdiri daripada kaum Kokos yang menetap di Lahad Datu, kaum ini asalnya ialah orang buangan ataupun banduan. Mereka telah dijajah oleh British dan dalam masa yang sama Sabah juga ditawan British. Pada suatu hari, British telah memberi pilihan kepada penduduk Cocos untuk berhijrah ke Borneo untuk bekerja di Ladang Kompeni Borneo. Lantaran menghadapi masalah kesempitan hidup di Pulau Cocos, maka ramailah yang telah membuat keputusan untuk datang ke Borneo.

Penempatan pertama mereka yang datang ke Sabah ketika itu ialah Kunak, Ladang Mostin, Lahad Datu dan beberapa kawasan lagi. Di Lahad Datu, pihak British telah memberikan tanah kepada kaum ini untuk didirikan rumah. Malah itulah perkampungan yang diberi nama Kampung Kokos seperti yang ada sekarang.

Di sini takda suara mummy dan daddy,
serta bicara nek wan, pak man, wawak dan bibik,
gua kehilangan suara lalakan anak kecik,
riang gembira bicara sanak saudara,
menguatkan kerinduan gua di tengah kota,
kedamaian seolah telah lari ke kampung.

Kesunyian menyelubungi diri gua,
apabila setiap kali bersendirian,
di sini gua kepingin masakan mummy yang enak dilatah,
asam pedas, masak lemak lombok api,
serta masakan kampung kek ikan berengkes,
kuih muih epok-epok yang dijamu soreh.

Masih gua ingat sewaktu soreh,
kicau unggas mendamaikan jiwa gua,
pohon-pohon yang kek balok dan bisa gua panjat,
sambil berehat dan menikmati buah-buahan,
di tenga dahan dan daun.

Di sini tak punya tu semua,
kota ini tak seindah lagi,
cukuplah sampai sini aja,
gua akan pulang juga!
Laden perasaan rindu,
yang menyerang gua.

Kerana perbezaan tetap punya,
walau satu Kota Kinabalu satu Kampung Kokos,
kedua-dua ada ko,
tetapi perbezaan kek langit dan bumi...

The Orang Cocos are an ethnic group residing in Sabah, eastern Malaysia on the island of Borneo. They primarily reside in Kampung Cocos near Lahad Datu in Tawau Division. Originally from the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (now part of Australia), they settled this area in the 1950s. Their current population of around 4000 is about eight times larger than the population remaining in the Cocos Islands themselves. They are accorded bumiputra status by the federal government. Their language, a variant of standard Malay, has the ISO designation of ISO 639-3 coa.

Bagi kaum Cocos yang asalnya dari Indonesia dan kemudiannya menetap di Sabah, upacara melulur pengantin lelki dan perempuan diadakan seminggu sebelum upacara mengarak(bersanding).Lulur di perbuat daripada beras,daun jambu batu,kunyit dan daun limau manis yang ditumbuk hingga lumat.Bagi masyarakat ini, fungsi tumbuh-tumbuhan ini amat penting kerana ia menandakan kebahagiaan pasangan pengantin baru yang lazimnya dari kaum mereka jarang berlaku penceraian ataupun suami yang beristeri labih daripada satu.
